I’m blessed. But I’m selfish. Self-focused. This project is part of my effort to develop disciplines that will direct my focus outward. Over the past year, I worked to develop a daily stance of gratitude. I have much to be grateful for. I’m grateful for the scores of people with whom I have interacted and who have impacted my life in positive ways. I am thankful for my home and my family and my country. I am thankful for the beauty of the world and all that is in it. I’ve tried to cultivate an attitude of thankfulness to provide a buffer against the weight of the negativity I often feel around me. My thin skin causes me to recoil from the reality of the violence, hatred, and intolerance in our broken world. You end up finding what you look for, so I’m looking for gratitude in daily life.

Finding gratitude may be a good start, yet if it only lives in my head, its power is limited. As an extension of last year’s efforts to be grateful, this year I’d like to express my gratitude each day in order to bring light and positivity into the world. I’m not sure how this project will unfold, but my hope is that it changes me for the better and perhaps someone else who stumbles upon my words will find gratitude in their own life as well.
